Nulla dies sine linea

In Nulla dies sine linea, choreographic and vocal practice meets whipcracking thanks to the collaboration with artist Mordjane Mira.
The Latin phrase Nulla dies sine linea, literally translated as no day without drawing a line, is taken up to write a physical, liberating and feminine manifesto. The phrase is attributed by Pliny to the Greek painter Apelles, of whom it is said that he did not let a day go by without practising, that alludes to the necessity of daily exercise, self-exercise, self-mastery, without which no goal can be achieved. The exercise achieved is not only about the practice and discipline of whipcracking.

Whipcracking is a sport that originates from the rural world of cattlemen, American cowboys, Australian stockmen and gauchos of the pampas. In its artistic form, it comprises several disciplines such as targeting (cutting objects with a whip), winding and single and double rhythmic routines (with one or two whips).
The idea is to strip this art of any stereotypes, transforming the use of an instrument of submission into an act of freedom and resistance against all forms of imposition. The whip has been used over the centuries in different contexts and for different purposes as a tool to ward off evil spirits, to propitiate fertility, to pass initiatory tests, to achieve purification of the spirit and sublimation of the body.

The crack that a whip produces has to do with a release of stored energy at a speed faster than the speed of sound. So when a person ‘throws’ the whip, that stored energy travels from the solid handle to the tip of the whip (cracker), creating a vacuum in space, the so-called sonic boom. The whip cracks due to the air returning to the vacuum.
The study of impetus and momentum allows us to reflect on the suddenness and impetus, not only as a sudden motion but in its different meanings of τέλος and spontaneous impulse of the soul.

Exploring whipcracking as a language allows us to express that feminine power that patriarchal culture represses and regulates. The femininity referred to is not performative, soothing, reasonable or submissive, but is a primordial force that cannot be contained.
Nulla dies sine linea is an opportunity for empowerment to reclaim those aspects considered wild and passionate (such as anger, strength or sexuality) and, as such, frowned upon in the capitalist framework of traditional patriarchal femininity.
